In May 1992, Mal founded the informal, no attitudes, multicultural International Volleyball Club of San Francisco, a nonprofit that brings together players from more than 40 countries and promotes tolerance and international camaraderie through the language of sport. More than 1,000 people have, at one time or another, participated in this cost-free, drop-in, year-round Sunday activity. Many have moved away, returned to their native lands or "retired" from the courts to raise a family, though most everyone tries to stay in touch.
